St Leonards draws the majority of its pupils from the surrounding area but we are proud that the appeal of the International Baccalaureate has also enabled a global outlook to flourish within the School, with students from over 35 different nationalities trading cultural insights in the classroom.

It’s a great way for our pupils to learn about internationalism - so important in the 21st century - and is an aspect of school life about which our school community is vocally appreciative.

Entry points

International pupils can apply at any stage, with boarding available from the age of 10. A popular point of entry for international pupils is the St Leonards Pre-IB course. This is a one-year, self-contained programme which allows students to gain sufficient mastery of a number of subjects to enable them to progress seamlessly to the IB Diploma or Career-related Programme. For pupils who require it the course includes English as an Additional Language.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

Specialist EAL tuition is available for pupils for whom English is not their first language. For non-native English speakers studying the Pre-IB, the course includes EAL. The requirement for EAL tuition for those joining the School at other stages will be identified by the School’s entrance tests.

The highest standards

Our boarders appreciate the friendly atmosphere within the boarding houses and quickly feel part of a close-knit family. International pupils will also have a UK based guardian from the point at which they begin their studies until the point at which they leave the School.

A Scottish experience

Our pupils benefit from the international mix at St Leonards, but we want them to experience and learn about the culture of Scotland too. Therefore, in addition to celebrating events like the Chinese New Year, our pupils also receive Scottish country dance lessons and celebrate Burns Night. They also draw inspiration from being situated in the heart of one of Scotland’s most historic towns with access to the ancient golf links for which Scotland is famous.  St Leonards prides itself on being a school steeped in Scottish history and tradition, but with a twist.
