Priorsgate comprises four two-bedroom apartments and one three-bedroom apartment, all available for self-catering breaks, each providing a comfortable, stylish ‘home away from home’ in St Andrews.

The Priorsgate apartments were redeveloped in 2022, and are decorated, furnished and equipped to the highest of standards, with everything guests will need to enjoy their stay.

A shared, enclosed garden is included for guests of the Priorsgate apartments to enjoy.

*A standard cleaning fee of £100 will be charged per apartment per stay. Cancellations - full refund for cancellations up to 30 days before check-in. If booked fewer than 30 days before check-in, full refund for cancellations made within 48 hours of booking and at least 14 days before check-in. After that, 50% refund up to 7 days before check-in. No refunds will be given after that time.

Location, Directions & Parking

Priorsgate is located at the end of South Street in St Andrews, next to the Arch at the top of The Pends and St Andrews Cathedral. The address is 2 South Street, St Andrews, KY16 9QU. Plenty of free on-street parking is available close by, both immediately across the street, and with more spaces available on The Pends, which is the road through the Arch that leads down to the St Andrews Harbour, and at the top of North Street next to the Cathedral. 


Check-in is from 3.00pm and check-out is at 10.00am.

Priorsgate is a two-storey building dating from around 1770, recently refurbished whilst retaining some wonderful period features. There is a two-bedroom apartment on the ground floor which has two steps at the entrance door. The four further apartments are on the first and second floors and are accessed by stairs. The three-bedroom apartment has a further internal staircase to access two of the bedrooms.

St Andrews is known as the ‘home of golf’ and for our golfing guests, there are secure golf storage lockers available. These are situated in the Priorsgate garden, enclosed and to the rear of the property. Each locker has its own padlock. Please let us know when booking if you would like a locker during your stay.

Priorsgate: a potted history

Priorsgate has seen many residents and many a use in its lifetime. The building originally formed part of Queen Mary’s House, which belonged to David Orme, Chamberlain to the Regent Moray, from 1560. Mary Queen of Scots is said to have stayed in the house during this time, hence the ‘royal’ name.

The Priorsgate end of the property was divided off in around 1785 by Professor George Hill, first Assistant Professor of Greek and then Professor at the University of St Andrews, and minister of the Second Charge at Holy Trinity Church in the town.

Fast-forward to 1889, and Priorsgate came into use as a boarding house for St Leonards School, which purchased it in 1945 and still owns the property today. Since then, it has housed private tenants and served as staff accommodation for the independent school, before undergoing an extensive redevelopment in 2021-22 to create the five stylish and contemporary self-catering apartments that exist today: the next chapter in Priorsgate’s rich history.
